A royal plant in Antiquity, it became a witchcraft plant in the Middle Ages. The Egyptians used it during mummification for its antibacterial properties. In India, it is sacred and is not used in food. Closer to home, the basil leaves evoke “the pistou” of Provence and their distillation allows to obtain an essential oil of French Basil which promotes relaxation and revitalizes . It is mainly cultivated around the Mediterranean. The aroma, with anise notes reminiscent of tarragon and eucalyptus, excels at perfuming a vegetable olive oil for example.
