Rural East Malaysia is a treasure trove of fertile soil and beautiful natural landscapes. Yet, rural communities there face some major issues, notwithstanding, the severe lack of infrastructure, education and economic opportunities.
Most of these communities are now aging as the younger generation heads to town for supposed better opportunities. Lacking social capital, not many take to the urban lifestyle easily and when survival poses too much of a challenge, a lot are left wanting and head back to the comforts of their kampungs.
Through revaluing almost-forgotten heirloom crops, and bringing back the dignity of farmers as food producers, Langit hopes that the choice to remain living in these beautiful rural villages will be an economically viable one. Come and listen to Langit’s founders talk about the opportunities and challenges that they face in their attempt to create economic opportunities in these remote villages of Malaysia.
We will also be serving up some small bites for you using native ingredients from Langit’s social project!
