Saffron & Serai is a Kuala Lumpur based Homeware & Lifestyle store highlighting Malaysian traditional culture in a contemporary aesthetic & twist in sustainable way.

Saffron & Serai aims to inspire people make sustainable a lifestyle by incorporating little things into daily life, such as reducing waste and upcycling.

Keeping fabric waste off landfills

After working as an interior designer in the UK, Saffron & Serai’s founder Iman Preece discovered that globally, up to 85% of textile waste goes to landfill and only 15% are recycled.

Shocked by such waste, she decided to collect fabric waste from the interior design industry and upcycles them into beautiful lifestyle products such as cushions and wraps.

Locking down, starting up

Iman had always wanted to build her own business, when the pandemic hit, she grabbed the golden opportunity to learn about business and sewing. She started buying sewing machine and learning through YouTube.

She also started making beeswax wraps to replace single use cling films. Through error and trial, Iman formulated the perfect beeswax recipes that works.

Beeswax wrap

Concerned with bee welfare and the use of chemicals, Iman started sourcing organic beeswax and sustainable pine resin in making the sustainable beeswax wrap.

Saffron & Serai’s beeswax wrap is breathable and keeps moisture, which helps to maintain food freshness. Its beeswax and jojoba oil also has anti-bacterial properties which makes food fresh and last longer.

Besides supporting local craft artisans, Saffron & Serai works with immigrants and refugees in Malaysia through the Tanma Foundation, which runs  livelihood programmes for Myanmarese refugees based on cooperative & fairness principles, empowering them to be economically independent.
